Ok but it was making a weird hum sound [loudly] , when we first started it, but since then we have used it a few time and it [knock wood] has been fine.

I have used the Magnavox DP170MW8B 1080P Upconversion DVD Player almost every day for a little more than two weeks. It works very well. A little basic on the features, but that is what I was looking for. A very slim unit and it fit well in my crowded entertainment center. The price from Amazon was great. Very happy with the purchase, (So far).

Nice machine, especially for the price. Opening screen and on-screen menus not great, but adequate. Tacky remote. Will play dang near anything. Nice picture quality.
In other words, an inexpensive machine that works better than expected but is, after all, an inexpensive machine. I would definitely recommend it, does a pretty nice job.

The picture quality from DVD’s is as good as I will ever need. Just super, easy to use remote, easy to program. I use the HDMI out to get the 1080p. If it lasts a reasonable amount of time it is one of the best bargains I have ever bought.

When I purchased this DVD player (Feb 2010), it was the cheapest DVD player available on Amazon at $35. (It seems prices are going up; my last DVD player cost less.) So far, it’s been working like a charm. It’s completely plug-and-play. I plugged it in using the cables that came with it, and the remote control also came with batteries. Unlike the last super-cheap DVD player I purchased, I’ve noticed no quality problems with this one so far. The sound and picture line up perfectly as far as I can tell. The picture and sound quality are fine, though I believe that’s a function of the TV, not the DVD player. My only complaints are with the remote control. First, it doesn’t seem to be very powerful. I have to be careful to point the remote directly at the DVD player or it doesn’t work. In addition, it’s a generic remote, and most of the buttons on it are not relevant to a DVD player. As a result, I have to hunt around for the DVD-specific buttons. My only other complaint is that the DVD player doesn’t appear to fast-forward faster than 5x. At least, for the fastest fast-forward speed, it says “5x” on the screen.
However, overall, for $35 it’s a perfectly good deal.
