I bought this budget DVD player to replace another budget DVD player (from Insignia) that I purchased a few years ago that was having some minor issues (occasional control lockups, disc tray problems).
Right out of the box this player had issues. There was occasionally a white flicker on part of the screen that lasted less than a second. It seemed like some data was not displaying properly. This was very distracting, but I resolved to try and fix it later. After playing 2 TV episodes the problem persisted even after I checked the cord connections and tried different ports and cords. I tried a new disc, but after playing for a few minutes it froze up. I stopped the disc, and then the player refused to even load. It simply says “loading” for minutes at a time, even with brand new discs. I tried resetting it to factory settings, but that did not help.
I know this is a budget DVD player, but it should at least work properly on the first day. My Insignia player still works just fine, with a few minor issues, years after I bought it. Don’t buy this, it is not worth the price. Find another budget brand.

I specifically bought this because it said it would play not only NTSC discs but PAL. But I put in my PAL disc, and changed the setting to PAL and it told me it was the incorrect region. Which would be fine if it didn’t say it was a PAL compatible player. My disc was from a different region but it was a PAL disc. All I want is to play my English movies but instead I have to return this thing. Sucks.

Not hardly worth the price, audio plays for previews but NOT for MOVIE, with the exception of, French, Spanish or CC. Sleek to look at but nothing else. My only regret is that I did not use this purchase until after my return date refund policy, this DVD SUCKS BIG time, please DO NOT WASTE your money on this piece of CRAP

Coby DVD-536 5.1 Channel DVD Player with Progressive Scan
A player that costs $6.00 for every DVD played is not cheap. I paid $30.00 to buy it new and after playing 5 DVDs really well in progressive scan mode through the Component Video video hook up it stopped being able to read region codes & rates everything “Invalid Disc”. Coby support rep. recommended resetting to the factory default & when that did not work said I would have to send it to them & include $12 to cover the return shipping. At $8.00 to ship it to them that raises the cost per movie to $10.00, assuming you already own the DVDs.
Pay more money up front & you’re more likely to get a DVD player that really IS inexpensive. If it say Coby on the box, it’s a sucker move IMO.

I bought this DVD player expecting a very basic (yet functional) DVD player to work for the next 10 months until I move. What I got was the worst piece of electronics I’ve ever purchased. The colors when hooked up with component connections were way off, everything looked very blue. I then hooked it up via S-video and the colors inproved, but the picture was much worse. I realize that this is a cheap DVD player, and I didn’t expect that it would last forever, but I did think that it would work out of the box. I will never buy a Coby product again. I will be returning this to Amazon.
