Question by Art Vandelay: Would placing floor speakers in a small wooden closet make them sound like crap?
I have limited space in my dorm room, and the only place to put my stereo when I go back is in my closet. I’ve got a pair of average-sized 3-way speakers and they will be placed at each side of the roughly 2ft by 6 foot wooden closet. Will they sound like crap, and is there any adjustment to the amp or speakers that would improve the sound?

Best answer:

Answer by d9d
Obviously they are NOT going to sound the best compared to having them out in the open as they were designed for. You might even create an echo effect if anything, perhaps piss off your next door neighbors. -but- considering you ARE in “dorm rooms” I don’t think it is going to matter much anyways. Sounds like this is your only choice.

The best adjustment would be your ear. Just setup the speakers and adjust everything according to how you LIKE it.

Question by Gwonam: How do I make the sound come from my speakers and not from my computer?
I bought some nice speakers at a garage sale, and I can’t get them to work properly. The sound comes from my speakers, and they work fine, but it also comes from the speaker in my computer. Can someone tell this idiot how to make it so the sound only comes from my speakers and not from the speaker in my computer?

Best answer:

Answer by Kristal
My best guess would be to go under your “Control Panel” and check under your sound settings if you operate through Microsoft Windows! Good Luck!

How are Bose Surround Sound speakers different from regular speakers?
The info im really looking for is what is the effect of the Surround Sound.

Best answer:

Answer by Chris W
They have a series of baffles that basically bounce the sound waves around to create constructive interference magnifying the signal several times.

Question by moocowhey: Can the front and back speakers of my surround sound system be separated by different distances?
Because my lounge is L shaped, the front speakers are going to be about 3 metres apart, but the back two speakers are going to be about 5 metres apart.

Is this ok?

Our sofa will be placed parallel to the front speakers (i.e. only cover the 3 metres of the back wall). There will be a dining table in the other 2 metre gap.

thanks for any help!

Best answer:

Answer by Rod P
EXCELLENT QUESTION!

Answer: No worries there. Because a surround-field benefits from some diffusion, the wider distance will not have a negative impact on your experience.

Front speaker placement is far more critical – the rule-of-thumb there is that the speakers should never be placed farther apart from one another as you shall be from the axis that they’re on. In other words, if your head is the top point of a triangle, the base of that triangle (with a speaker on each end) should never be wider than the distance from that base-line to your head. An equilateral triangle representing the widest placement that is still okay.

With the rears, just make sure that the tweeters (or basically the entire surround speaker) should be pointing toward the direction where your head will be on the couch, generally speaking.

When surround speakers are installed directly to the left and right of the seating position, this is sometimes referred to as “the headphone effect” – and it will work just fine for the surround channels to do their thing effectively.

So if your speakers end up behind the listening position, all the better, just don’t forget to “toe them in” a little so they point toward the couch.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Question by Julie: How should i set my surround sound speakers to get the best bass?
I have an Insignia 6.1 Channel receiver with 5 RCA 80 watt speakers and 1 RCA 80-100 Watt Subwoofer. I want to know how i can set these up for the best possible bass. I have messed around with the settings a little bit and i know i can change all of the speakers from a -10 to a +10 I am wondering how i should set these for the best bass. I have tried to turn all of the speakers down but the subwoofer, but the sound that comes through the speakers is distorted. Any help would be appreciated =)

Best answer:

Answer by Jefferson
You’ll have to look in the “Insignia” owner’s manual to figure this one out…But ALL home theater receivers have a special set-up menu…The section of the menu you’re looking for refers to the SIZE of your speakers.

You can set your 5 speakers to “LARGE” or “SMALL”…And you can set your Sub-woofer to “YES” or “NO”…This doesn’t refer to actual SIZE…It decides where the BASS gets played.

If you set the Sub-woofer to “YES” and the all the speakers to “SMALL”, you’ll get better bass…Also, the Sub-woofer itself has it’s own VOLUME control on it (usually).

Also, try placing the Sub-woofer in different corners of the room…You’d be surprised that moving a the sub a few inches can make it twice as loud as before…But move it around and play with it…Find the best bass possible.
