I am looking to buy an LCD monitor and I have found a variety of contrast ratios and sellers trying to boast about them. I have seen from 800:1 to 10000:1. Which one is better? What should I be looking for in an LCD monitor?

The higher the contrast, the more clear the picture will be. However, some contrast ratios are skewed because there is no definitive way to measure contrast ratio so some companies put numbers that don’t really mean anything.

I have a new HP laptop and a 5 year old HP desktop, I would like to be able to use my new Plasma which is a Panasonic, as my computer monitor for one of these computers(preferably the desktop), how and what would I need to do this? Thank you.

i think you can with some kind of VGA cable but im not 100% sure.

READ CAREFULLY here. I have a Sharp Aquos 37″ LCD TV. There were many different models of the 37″ Aquos LCD TV. Some came with a VGA adapter, some came with a DVI (HDMI) adapter, and some didn’t come with any. The native resolution is an awkward one. I’ve connected my computer to this television in every possible way, using every possible cable at every possible resolution. I either get no picture, blurry picture, pixelated picture or ghosted picture. When used as a TV, it is awesome! When used as a monitor, it is very poor. I WANT EVERYONE’S EXPERIENCED OPINION on what they prefer as an LCD TV (not plasma) and I want all the specs too please. I want to know what cable you are using and how it connects. Is it composite, component, DVI/HDMI VGA S-video whatever. I want to know what video card, what resolution on the card AND what the native (preferred/default) resolution is on the LCD TV. What size it the TV, the model # etc. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.

Most lower cost TV’s (LCD or otherwise) do not work well as monitors, (except for games which have large text and lots of motion). You can pick up a 21/22 inch Widescreen LCD monitor (1680×1050 res) for anywhere from just over $ 200 to just under $ 400. I got my Westinghouse at best buy on sale for $ 220. As a computer monitor, these work much better than an LCD TV costing closer to $ 1000. But they are not as good for watching movies.

Requirements to directly connect a monitor with a cable box:

1 – The monitor needs to be HDCP-compliant.

2 – The cable box needs to be one of the newer digital HD cable boxes. The old low-definition-only cable boxes do not have any outputs that are compatible with computer monitors.

Digital HD cable boxes have either a DVI or HDMI output, which are compatible with HDCP-compliant computer monitors. When you connect an HDCP-compliant monitor to a digital HD cable box, you turn that monitor into an HDTV.

So check your monitor to see if it is HDCP-compliant or not, and check your cable box and see if it is a digital HD box.
