This receiver is hooked up to a set of Deftech 1000’s, and the sound quality is mediocre at best. The receiver is really sub-par. The HDMI pass-through quality is terrible. Bad artifacts and it occasionally cuts out during action scenes. I’ve heard the firmware fixes the handshake issues, but after it’s all set up, thats going to be a pain.
Sound is muffled. Very poor mid-range. Highs, Mids and Lows just don’t blend well together.
I’m being very critical, because if you have to cut quality to offer features like HDMI pass-through, then maybe you shouldn’t have that feature. The only plus I can come up with is that it is a well price POS. If thats what you are looking for.
If my installer will take it back, I’m switching to an Onkyo.

I am very pleased with this product so far. The sound quality is great and there are a lot of features. The YPAO works very well testing even the correct connection of your speakers. You can equalize each channel independently if you want. To some people who had problems with the assignability of audio inputs there is a firmware update in the web of Yamaha, so the problem is solved. I updated the firmware because I wanted to connect mi computer via HDMI (video) and Coaxial (audio) and it works fine. Also I installed a Liteon Bluray drive to mi PC so now I can enjoy full HD movies in my TV through this receiver. Saddly the audio output of my PC doesn’t handle Dolby True HD or DTS HD. That until I buy a set top player, but in my country these are very expensive at this time.
The sound quality is great with movies and music. I have a little collection of music in DTS multichannel format that sounds really good.
The upscaling is not the best but it does a better job than a cheap dvd player with hdmi output, even better than my LCD Samsung 40″ Series 5 FullHD so I use this function to watch legacy dvd.
I must say that this is not an audiophile or a high-end receiver, but for the price it’s not intended to be that. In a matter of fact, Yamaha has reduced some costs with some cheap connectors for the speakers, but that not interfere in the sound. The GUI looks outdated too, but that not compromise the final quality of the sound neither. Despite those details I put 5 stars to this product because the features and the sound quality are equal or superior to other products in his price range, and fulfill my present expectations, and with 4 hdmi inputs and high resolution audio decoding it will in the future too.

I upgraded from a Sony STR DE945 non HDMI receiver, to this new HDMI RX-V565BL Yahama. The sound quality is every bit as good as the Sony and it runs half as hot as the Sony. Old Sony lasted 7 years until a relay on main board shorted out. Install was easy, set up of settings was some what confusing along with its remote control usage. Its display is also difficult to read at more than a few feet away. I am very pleased with this receiver after 45 days of usage. It is a good buy, and has all the spec’s that I needed for upgrading to HDMI.I have Dishnet722 DVR, 61″ Samsung DLP-750 and component Sony dvd and vcr, Sony satelite speaker system with Sub and extra center speaker I put in Kitchen. I was able to snyc. surround and use the TV for center speakers. So I use TV speakers, and center speaker(behind TV), another center speaker in kitchen, 1- sub and 4 satelites. I put the additional center speaker behind TV so I can hear sound when I want to. EX. RADIO, CD when TV sound is off. This is handy to hit mute only once, if TV volume is off.

Sorry, Jaffe. I just don’t agree with your assessment and can’t help but think that there must be other issues associated with your setup. I did not find this to be a mediocre device at all.
I was in the market for a current HDMI compatible A/V receiver. Like another reviewer before me, I too had an older Sony that ran hot and was built before the transition to true high definition audio and video.
I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination and am generally happy and satisfied with very good, high quality stereo systems. I have the DirecTV HD Package, a Sony 46 inch 60Hz LCD 1080p television and a set of JBL Northridge 5.1 surround-sound speakers that my son got me a few years ago for father’s day – bless you, Nick. It’s not a state of the art system, but it both looks and sounds great. I just needed a new receiver.
I looked at several “best sellers” here at Amazon.com and read through the specifications and reviews carefully. I had always liked the way Yamaha’s Natural Sound amplifiers sounded and decided that now was the time to finally select one for my home system. So far, I am not at all disappointed with my selection.
I was particularly impressed with the simple, sleek design and the ease of setup. If you too select this system, don’t pass on their microphone assisted sound field setup, which even alerted me to an inadvertent out of phase wiring error I had made. I found that it’s self-setup; based upon the layout and acoustic profile of my living room, produced an exceptional balance of high-, mid-, and low-frequencies with ample volume from the rears.
All in all, I am thrilled with this addition to my home theater and as I mentioned, I thought it was a very good value for the affordable price.

Totally excited to find a Yamaha with 4 HDMI inputs on it, but I am now returning it.
I have a Tivo Series 3 HD that I am trying to use, and this receiver has a bug when changing TV channels on the tivo. The Dolby Digital signal drops from the tivo, and the receiver tries to re-autodetect it every time you change channel. The end result is a digital “Chirp” that plays over the speakers and is REALLY annoying.
I have tried swapping the unit out for a new one, changing wires, changing wall plugs to eliminate ground issues, tried with my other Tivo that i own, etc. Its is a known issue on tivo community forums (search for digital cough) that plagued a lot of older models of Yamahas. Aparently this new model has the same issue.
i called Yamaha, and they claim to have never heard of the issue. They suggested the unit was faulty and I exchange it. Replacement model did the same thing.
I am now looking for a new brand and a new receiver. Very sad indeed.
