I don’t have much experience with home theater sound systems. A friend has an expensive one in a large living room, and it makes impressive noises. So when I made the jump to HDTV I decided to upgrade the sound. But the room I use for TV watching is a small bedroom. It didn’t make sense to me to spend $500-$600 for sound in this room. This inexpensive Sony (HT-DDW670) unit got good reviews here so I decided to try it.
Setting it up was not difficult. It worked the first time I turned it on, and it works very well indeed. As my grandson said when I put on a Harry Potter DVD, “It’s awesome, Grandpa.” ‘Nuff said.

Sony, the company that was famous for crackling speakers, lousy receivers, and bad subwoofers, has finally rocked the nation with this wonderful surround sound system. First of all, as one of the best features that is hard to come by on a speaker system of this calibur, is the price. Okay, 200 bucks might set you back a few days of work, but it definitly won’t set you back with a cinema quality surround sound experience. Yeah; you heard me correctly. You are getting a quality sound system from Sony. I absolutly love this system because it has so much capibility. Here’s what I recommend: plug in your cable/satellite box, your VCR, your DVD player (one isn’t included with the system), your Xbox or whatever videogame system you have, and let ‘er rip! Rummmmble… goes the bass, twwwwweeeeet… goes the tweeters, “Next on ABC…” goes the basic speakers giving out the best sound possible. Also, get the good speaker wire so you can set this up with quality. Well, buy it. BUY IT!!!

I have had this system for about 2 years. For 200$ it’s a great bargain. I think I got it for 250$ when bought my first plasma tv. MSRP was 350$ I think. Anyway, It has plenty of sound for a smaller room. The sound field isn’t that large, so you really notice that your listening to a speaker system, instead of being enveloped by the movie. The sub was much stronger then I expected from an out of the box system, and has subtle, accurate response.
My major complaint is the lack of HDMI, and the speaker setup process. It was very hard for me to really get the speakers levels were I want them. You can adjust the front, rear, and center independently, but I just could never get them how I wanted them.
All in all, a good system for someone who just wants to make their movie or gaming experience better. Definitely better then just using the TV speakers.

After a year of using an RCA “home theater lite” 100W 5.1 system, this easily kills it. The RCA system was ok, and it was just 100 bucks, but it doesn’t touch this thing. The feature set on this unit is HIGH END. Dolby Digital encoder, coax and optical, and three analog outs! The FM radio reception is EXCELLENT, the unit can create a 5.1 situation if one is not present (quite well, actually). The options are long as well. You can use 2 channel stereo, PCM Stereo, Mono, Pro Logic 1 and 2, and about 5 others I haven’t even used yet! My biggest problem was getting a low end unit that could read “on the fly” digital signals from my DISH receiver. This unit handles it with NO problem.
Now,you buy these for the sound, right?
Worry no more! This thing sounds so clear you’ll think you stole it. The speakers are interchangeble if you dont like the sound, and the sub is PASSIVE, but there is a “Sub Out” jack for the folks who want a powered unit. The sub is the only thing that get’s a 4/5, because it simply does not “boom” well watching movies. It SOUNDS well, just doesnt shake the room. The speaker wire is also low gauge, so replacing it might be a good idea out of the box. I guarantee you will love this system. You’ll feel like you should send Amazon an extra 200 bucks for the value!

Sure, it could have more power and larger satellite speakers but I bought it for the price mainly. It works perfectly for my Home Theater needs. The separation of the dialogue from the other background sounds is worth the price alone. I was surprised at how much sound the center speaker handles. It will be hard to watch without it and not laugh at the wimpy TV speaker sound we used to live with!
