Just hooked eveything up this week and was pleasantly surprised. I had been using what was at the time (19 years ago) one of Pioneers top of the line receivers with Dolby Pro Logic surround sound. It still works fine, but I tell you: the sound from this inexpensive receiver blows away the old one. For me, just for the Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound feature playing through my Bose Acoustimass system is just amazing. I will play with it a little further for sound enhancements and see where it goes. The connections were simple and the HDMI hookups make it easy for the TV install.

I ordered this for a friend as a replacement for a Panasonic SA-HE70 (which got good reviews a few years ago). He isn’t disappointed. He now is set for both 3D and blu-ray HiDef. With his Bose speaker system, he doesn’t need much power, but this little receiver seems to have alot of it for the money.
This is Pioneer’s bottom of the line, but don’t let that fool you. It has 3 HDMI 1.4a inputs, decodes Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Audio, and Dolby Pro Logic IIz, is Blue Tooth ready (need adapter), and 3-D video ready. Quite a bargain for $200.
Cons: Spring Clips for surround sound speakers (binding posts for the mains).
If you don’t connect with HDMI, DVD audio is monitored thru the “CD” connection. It took a little while to figure this out -causing much anxiety.
If you want a basic surround reciever that is fully capable of supporting all current forms of video and audio, you could do alot worse than the VSX-520-k, and, for the money, you would be hard-pressed to do better.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1XTITJSBPIZE8 I purchased this receiver, and not the more expensive Pioneer because I didn’t want On Screen Display, and all the other nonsense. I also bought this receiver to utilize HDMI, which currently is technologically speaking, the most up to date. This receiver has great sound for those that don’t blast the receiver. This receiver sounds as good as any receiver at a normal listening level. This receiver doesn’t have a lot of power, and if you are planning on having parties and want loud bass, this may not be the receiver for you.
Points I wanted to edit regarding the video review: the mode that has the echo during Multiplayer games was in the Advanced Settings for games, and not the Pro Logic II Game setting which is a 5.1 setting. That particular setting sounds nice. Also, at the end of the video I used the Dolby Pro Logic which I confirmed from the owners manual is a 4.1 setting.
Speakers used during demonstration:
Bose® Acoustimass® 10 Series IV home entertainment speaker system – Black
Bose VCS-10 Center Channel – Speaker, home theater sound for component systems – Black
Hope this helps. Peace!

I purchased this Receiver to compliment a Samsung 8000 Series LED TV, WDTV HD Digital Media Player, HD Cable. I also purchased a Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker Package to complete the system. I am very satisfied with the results and also happy with the cost of the Receiver and the Speaker Package. The sound is excellent, very crisp and clear regardless of the volume. I wasn’t looking for a Mega Watt system that would blow the windows out of my home. The power of this system has proven to be more than adequate for my needs and the system setup was relatively simple. I also purchased a Logitec Harmony 550 Remote to control everything. I really like having to push one button to turn everything on / off as well as set the appropriate TV and Receiver inputs.
