I was using a Sony home theatre in a box for 5.1 sound for both DVD playback and BD playback via PS3. I know, I know, it’s a poor substitute. The Sony “amplifier” couldn’t handle loud explosions and low bass scenes. So, I decided to plunge in after much haggling with my better half. What can I say? Action movies never sounded that good, in fact DTS-HD can kick some of the cinema’s sound systems today.
Setup was initially difficult. The speaker wire cutting and stripping actually. I used Chord Campana speaker wires. These were from the UK. Thought it was hard enough to strip them, but I made a bad mistake ordering only 10 metres of it. That’s another issue…
Finding out I didn’t have enough for my rear surround speakers, I quickly placed an order for a set of 50 feet Monster speaker cables. Surprisingly, it was cheap from Amazon, unlike its other cables. Arrived today, set up the remaining wires, cutting and stripping them…It was tougher than I thought, the plastic coverings for the Monster wires are really thick!
After which, it’s gaming and BD time in HD audio! Enjoy! You wouldn’t regret this purchase. Great price for a mid-range product as stated by previous reviwers.

I have several Onkyo products. I have always been happy with them until recently one of them need servicing. I had never had to deal with Onkyo support. They are by far the worst customer support I have dealt with. They do not return phone calls. There is no RMA system in place. I have been told it would take 10 days to repair it. When I send the equipment and call to check the status I have been told it would take 3-4 weeks. Onkyo makes good products but they need long ways to go for customer support.

well the receiver itself is a good deal if u get a good one the features are great and it is very user friendly. I have had mine for almost 3 months and have only been in possesion of it for 1 month. 2 weeks after i got it the left surround channel started getting a low level static along with the sound i changed speakers wire everything i could do and nothing so i called onkyo support and thats about worthless all they would do is tell me to take it to a service shop so i did. i got it back after a month and a half and it worked fine for 3 weeks and now its back again beause onkyo wont exchange anything unless its been in for service 3 times. but like i said if u get a good one u will be happy with it. however i would not recomend any onkyo product just on the fact of customer service there rude and unwilling to help. ive always been a fan of onkyo but will never buy again i recomend pioneer or yamaha. hope this helps

I upgraded from an older model Panasonic to this Onkyo. My criteria was simple: <$500 and HDMI 1.3A. I’m normally a big fan of Pioneer, specifically the Elite models, but I think this Onkyo got overall better reviews. After 3 weeks of use I’m very pleased with it with one exception. First the pros: using HDMI cables (one to my TV and one to my BD player) it was up and running in minutes. It was the easiest thing I ever set up. The instruction manual is well planned out and easily readable. The OSD (set-up) was simple to navigate and the remote is easy to use. The receiver runs hot, most of them do. So leave a good foot of space over it if you have it in an enclosed rack. Now the con: The speaker connections are very close together and if using bare wire, are designed for small gauge only (14 – 16 or smaller.) All of my previous speaker cable used spades and had to be replaced. Yes, you should use banana plugs and the plugs can be purchased separately and fitted to bare wire. I think this is a decent amp for this price range and I’d recommend it.

It seems I am the one of many who were drawn in with the price of this receiver…who wouldn’t want 4 HDMI inputs for such a great price? The answer is: anyone who wants a hot, black box with 4 HDMI inputs but no actual HDMI functionality. I connected this to my PS3 and a cable box, it worked great for a few weeks. Then I started having trouble with the cable box. Surely it couldn’t be this awesome Onkyo receiver, right? I mean, I just bought it and paid good money for it! So I had the cable box replaced. Guess what? I still couldn’t connect it with HDMI, I had to use component video. Awesome. Shortly after, my PS3 wouldn’t show a signal. I could monkey around with it for awhile (turn the PS3 unit on and off) but soon it stopped working altogether. So now I have my PS3 connected directly into my TV (GREAT sound, except the exact opposite) and I have my HD cable box going thru the component video input.
When I emailed customer support, they said I could ship it to another time zone for repair and of course I’d have to cover the shipping there AND be without a receiver for God knows how long. No thanks.
This isn’t what I paid for. My advice: save your money, get a brand with better reliability.
