An inexpensive stereo amplifier. I had previously been listening to music through a Dynaco ST-70 – a mass-produced stereo tube amplifier kit from the 60s. Hardly a high-end piece of equipment, but it sure blows this Harman Kardon away! No comparison! The Harman Kardon sounds dull, boomy, and harsh next to a decent tube amplifier of comparable price. I’m sorry I bought it.

I recently bought the HK 3390 to replace a 20+ year-old Yamaha receiver that finally died. It arrived the other evening and took no time at all to set up. (I should note: this is just for playing music, not part of a home theater.) As several reviewers have said, for this application and at this price, the amplifier is superb. In my case it’s connected to a set of (again, vintage!) ADS L570/2 speakers. I popped in a CD of The Nutcracker, complete, recorded back in the 1990s by Seiji Ozawa and the BSO in Symphony Hall. Absolutely GORGEOUS sound compared to my old receiver. Every layer of the orchestration was clear, resonant and LIVE — as though I were sitting first balcony center in that glorious room. I’ve rarely been so happy with a purchase as I am with this. And I feel twenty years younger, too!

The first thing I noticed when I hooked up my speakers and got the HK running was the bass. It sounded like I had added a subwoofer to my system. Suddenly I was hearing bass that I had not heard with my Onkyo receiver. More than enough inputs. It doesn’t look like any other receiver I’ve ever seen. The remote is incredibly large. Too large and the bright white power light is a bit annoying but those are small things compared to all the positives.
